Afrânio Fonseca

Born in Fortaleza, Ceará, Afrânio Fonseca graduated from the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts.

Like Arcimboldo, he creates hybrid works that combine different objects. His works have a touch of surrealism and humour, characteristic of his adopted country of Belgium.

To make his assemblage sculptures, the artist uses broken or abandoned porcelain as a raw material. This is his way of working with all those who have been forgotten, excluded, who have lost their histories, their memories, their places and their functions. For him, porcelain is a metaphor for the human soul, delicate and fragile.

He has won several awards and honours, such as: 2nd place in the Audience Award competition at the Carte de Visite/ARTopenKUNST exhibition in Brussels; Special mention by the jury at the 12th International Mosaics Meeting in Chartres, France; Exhibition at the Minsky Gallery in Paris; 2019 - School of Fine Arts Award at the Bemosaïque 2019 in Wavre, Belgium; "Chimères" - Solo exhibition at La Maison de la Mosaïque Contemporaine in Paray-le-Monial, France; 2022 - 1st Jury Prize at the Mosaic Triennial in Couvin, Belgium; 2022 - 2nd Picassiette Prize at the 14th International Mosaic Meeting in Chartres, France.
